The Vikram and Vetal stories are a great favourite among the young and old alike. These stories form an integral part of Indian folkloreand are believed to be many centuries old. These are a collection of stories told by a vampire (Vetal) to the legendary king Vikramaditya who bears him on his shoulders.
The story goes that King Vikramaditya promised a magician who approached him in the guise of a saint that he would capture a vampire and bring it to him. The king had to undertake the journey at midnight. However, there was a condition. The king had to undertake the whole journey in silence. King Vikramaditya succeeded in capturing the vampire many times but the latter found a way to free himself. Each time the vampire was captured, he told the king a story as he was being taken to the magician during each night. Each story ended in a riddle which Vikramaditya had to answer. If at the end, king Vikramaditya could not answer the question correctly, the Vetal agreed to remain in captivity and allow himself to be taken to the magician. If the king answered the question correctly, the vampire would escape and return to his tree. If the King knew the answer but stayed silent, then his head would burst and he would die. The king answered the question correctly each time and this paved way for the Vetal to escape. This happens many times. However for one particular story (the 25th story), the king had no answer. The Vetal allowed himself to be taken to the magician.
Once they reached the magician, the Vetal revealed the magician's actual intentions to the king. The magician actually wanted to behead the king. The magician could gain control over the Vetal only if the king was beheaded. The king with Vetal's help succeeded in beheading the magician. The king was offered a boon by the Vetal. The king requested that the life of the magician be restored and the Vetal come to his aid whenever the king needed his help.
The stories of Vikram and Vetal were originally written in Sanskrit but are now available in most Indian languages. All these tales revolve around the wisdom of King Vikramaditya in answering the Vetal's questions. The popular children's magazine Chandamama carries a story of Vikram and Vetal in each edition. Many Vikram and Vetal stories have also been telecast on television.
