Origin of the Arabian Nights

How the Arabian Nights came to be written is a story by itself. It is believed that the daughter of a king's minister told the king the stories illustrated in the book over a period of 1001 nights.

The King Shahriyar loved his new wife more than anything else. However, after many years, he found out about her infidelity. In a fit of rage, the king had her beheaded by the minister. The king who was convinced that all women were cheats decided to punish them by marrying a woman every day and beheading her the next day. The minister's intelligent daughter wanted to put an end to the king's act. So, she requested her father to get her married to the king who she knew loved stories. With a heavy heart, the minister agreed to this. Just before day break, the queen began telling a story. She made the story reach the most exciting part at day break. The king who was eager to know what happened next, postponed the execution by a day. The next day, the queen very cleverly completed the previous story and started a new one. The king who was engrossed in the story did not know the trick she was playing. This went on for a 1001 nights. It was initially planned to have the stories told for a thousand nights. However, the last story extended to an extra night. This is the reason why these stories are called One Thousand Nights and a Night. By this time, the king had forgotten about the punishment.

The Arabian Nights were originally composed in Arabic. The first English edition was released in 1706. Along with wisdom, these tales contain an element of fantasy and are known for adventure.
