Your doctor may check for a certain kind of bacteria called Group B Strep. These are usually harmless but if they are present during labour, your baby is likely to be prone to meningitis or pneumonia. So your doctor may give you antibiotics to prevent transmission of the bacteria from your body to the baby's body. If you had an infection during a previous delivery, you may catch the infection during your next delivery also. Other possibilities of being prone to this infection are if you develop a fever during labor or have a urinary tract problem.
