23-Month Old

Congratulations! By the end of this month, your toddler has completed two years.

At this stage, on an average your toddler boy is 87.6 cm tall and weighs 12.3 kg. On the other hand, if you have a girl, she will be around 86.5 cm tall and weigh 11.8 kg.

You can start toilet training your toddler at this stage. A good idea is to train her in the summer when she has fewer clothes on her. You may find it surprising that your toddler will usually give you clues when she is ready to get started with toilet training. Some of these are a dry diaper for a longer period of time. She likes wearing an underwear and can pull down her underwear by herself. She will also imitate your bathroom routines. Read more on toilet training your toddler.

Your toddler should be able to undress himself partly and may even be able to dress partly. She should be able to play the role of feeding a doll. She can make spontaneous scribbles, build a tower of four to six blocks and topple a container to empty the contents. At this stage, she can pull a toy behind him or carry a large toy as she walks. This can also be several small toys. She begins to run, can stand on her toes and is capable of kicking a ball. She can also climb up and down furniture without help and also climbs up and down the steps holding on to the rails. Your little one may also jump up and down. She may also use one hand more than the other.

At this stage, the little one begins to identify objects hidden under two or more covers. She also begins sorting objects based on shapes and colours. She starts adopting the make-believe play. She tries to insert a tube into the pipeline. She walks slowly to avoid spilling water from the tumbler. She imitates others' behaviour such as adults and older children. She becomes aware of her individuality and understands herself to be different from others. She is also enthusiastic about being in the company of other children. At this point of time, your toddler shows signs of increasing independence and begins to show traits of defending herself. She gets over the phase of separation anxiety. But she is still fearful of strangers as she walks with a new group of people and into new situations she is not used to. Slowly she learns how to handle herself in peer groups.

Your toddler has a repertoire of more than 50 words and uses two-word utterances more frequently. She displays increasing interest in verbal communication. She may put nouns and verbs together such as 'Mummy come', 'Daddy go' etc. Her receptive speech - understanding suggestions, questions and warnings - shows that her development is progressing rapidly. Even if children are not combining words, rich and appropriate gestural speech means that actual speech is likely to follow.

The toddler will probably identify and name one item in a picture. She may also identify and point to four items in a picture and point to an object or a picture that you name.
