A hysterosonogram (HSN) or sonohysterogram (SHG) is an ultrasound exam used to evaluate the inside of the uterus. It is best to do this test during the second week of the menstrual cycle. This test identifies abnormal uterine shape and other uterus related abnormalities. These include scarring, fibroids, polyps and uterine septum. It is sometimes recommended if the woman has multiple miscarriages or abnormal vaginal bleeding.
A catheter is inserted into the uterus and a saline liquid is inserted to enlarge the uterus. The saline makes it easy to visualize the interior of the uterus and provides better results compared to a regular ultrasound scan. A small sample of tissues from the lining of the uterus is checked for abnormalities. You may be able to watch the procedure on a monitor during the exam.
Some side effects of a HSG are:
These side effects last only for a few days.
If uterine abnormalities are detected using a SHG, you may be tested further using hysteroscopy or laparoscopy.
