I think you should never smack your child. This may cause low self confidence and low self esteem in him. Also if you resort to smacking, he may not know that it is wrong to hit others. Because you hit him, he may come to the conclusion it is okay for him to beat or hit others.
You should just be firm while disciplining him. Being firm does not mean spanking is a must.
