My baby is four months old and I want to get her started on formula along with semisolid food. Can anyone please suggest what semisolid food I can feed her?
Oh dear! Don't get her started on semisolid food so early. Doctors advise waiting till she is about six months old. Till then, breast milk is the ideal choice. However if you really want to get her started, yogurt and iron fortified cereals are a good choice. Remember to mash them well to pureed form before you feed her. And wait for about 3 days before you introduce a new food. This will help you determine if she is allergic to any particular food.
Please take it easy and continue breastfeeding for a little more time. When you do get her introduced to formula and semisolid foods, make sure they are composed of a single cereal. Rice or oatmeal is a good starter. After trying out different ingredients individually, you can combine them to make a mixed puree. Remember to steam or bake the baby food and avoid boiling them. This preserves the nutrients in the food. Also, your baby may have a sweet tooth and prefer fruits and sweeter vegetables such as carrots and sweet potatoes. You must aim at introducing her to different foods and not stick to just her favourites. If she does not take to a particular food once, keep trying in different meals. She may take time to start liking them.
