Of Dark Room games

The brat has an entourage of pintsizes of approximately his age who run around the compound like pack dogs terrorising the little girls who come in their path. They gather, foaming at the mouths with tiredness, in the lobby where steel plates or wide tubs or actual genuine Beyblade arenas are deployed to play their fearsome Beyblade matches, their primary contribution to which seems to comprise loud shouts of "One, Two and led id riiiiippppp!" Given the cavernous vaults of the lobby, the sounds

Vazhathandu(Banana stem) pachadi

A lot of people shy away from cooking vazhathandu at home simply because the prep work is time consuming. Well, chopping this vegetable up finely is definitely hard work, but given the fact that it has several health benefits, it is totally worth it. To cut the thandu, slice it into thin circles. Then stack a few circles one on top of the other and cut them into thin vertical strips. Cut these again horizontally to get small pieces.I usually cut it the previous night and refrigerate it. When ref

And school reopens

After around ten days of waking up at hours odd enough to havebreakfast morph into lunch, the brat had to be roused at the ungodlyhour of seven am yesterday. He was stretched out, the way kids who have nary a care in the worldstretch out and sleep, with his arms thrown wide across the bed, sleeping on his back, snoring gently. It seemed criminal to break intohis dream and snatch drag him out for the cruelty of a quick bath andthen on to school. I tarried a while. I looked at him. Looked at thefeat

Anushka's Letter to Santa

Anush wrote her first letter for Santa and placed it in the balcony in a stocking since we do not have a chimney. If we were to keep it inside the house with all the doors secured, Santa will not be able to retrieve it!! Now Santa has to work on a suitable reply. Anush and her grandpa went to the Aero Museum in HAL. Very interesting and engaging is what my father and his grandchild had to say about their space odyssey. Anush was talking about heat shields and parachutes and bomb planes and safe

Christmas Carols..

D & S sang for a Christmas Carol service by the St. Marks Children's Choir last Saturday (Dec 11th). Was so proud of the difference in way Damita was singing compared to the first time she performed. She knew all the words by heart, and sang with all her heart - it was so nice to see. Achievement by Shehan - to have stood on stage for all 14 songs :). Don't know how much he actually sang - waiting for the video to come out to see that! No photos unfortunately as I didn't have hubby around t

Kashmiri Dum Aloo for Indian Cooking Challenge

The Indian Cooking Challenge set for us this month by Srivalli is Dum Aloo. I have tried several versions of this dish before, but haven't ever cooked it using the dum method of cooking which involves sealing the cooking pot tightly with flour paste and letting the curry cook in its own steam. The recipe sounded easy enough and I had all the ingredients on hand. I completed this challenge within days of Valli posting it.What I think of the dish:The dish looked fantastic. As far as the taste goes

Afternoon activities

I never seem to get any alone-time with Ads nowadays. By the time he gets back from school, cleans up, has a quick snack and we settle down to some activity, Y is generally up from her nap, often a little cranky and I have to give her the lion's share of my attention. So the infrequent days when she naps longer than usual, are times when Ads and I get some much-treasured one-on-one time together. This morning, while walking to the bus stop, we were talking about the human heart and he wanted to

Ads tantrum, and mine

I'd be a fab mother if I was more patient = less short-tempered.Yeah, right.......like that's the ONLY reason I'm NOT a fab mother yet :(Whom am I kidding?!!That apart, being more patient, more zen, less liable to fly off the handle, has to be a good thing in itself. I know this. The constant struggle to get there, and the more-or-less constant failures, make me suspect that I'm simply not trying hard enough. My kids aren't angels, but they are pretty good kids; and I always feel I'm shortchangi

Of the brat, the storyteller.

The brat sat down at Nana's house yesterday, five fullscape sheets in his hand and a pencil in the other. His brow furrowed deep in concentration. And he began writing. And writing. Nana was snoring on the sofa in most inelegant manner, and none to pleased at being constantly roused to provide the spelling for random words. Mamma was shaken awake and called upon to provide illustrations at appropriate junctions to keep the visual interest alive in the epic tale unfolding. By the time Nana a
