A hungry baby communicates through a number of signs that she is ready to be fed. Crying is often the last indicator that she is hungry.
Tips to Know if Baby is Hungry
- She smacks her tongue and puts her tongue in and out of her mouth repeatedly.
- She may suck her hands, fingers or lips.
- She moves her head rapidly to find something that she thinks she can latch on and appears more alert than usual.
- She opens her mouth wide when you touch her cheek, hair or lips.
- She moves her arms and legs about quite excitedly.
If your baby starts crying because of hunger, you must calm her before giving her a feed. Your baby may also be more hungry if she did not have enough breast milk or formula the last time you fed her.
