Breast milk leaking and breast milk spraying occurs during the first few weeks after your baby is born and is highly common. Breast milk leaking and breast milk spraying are highly associated with letdown reflex. Thinking or talking about your baby and hearing her cry can also trigger breast milk leaking and breast milk spraying. If you have established a feeding timetable for your little one and are late in feeding her, your breasts may start leaking and spraying. This can also happen from one breast as you feed from the other.
Treating Breast Milk Leaking and Breast Milk Spraying
- Stock enough nursing pads and change them whenever the ones you are wearing become wet. Do not use the ones with plastic or washproof liners. They retain dampness instead of absorbing it and can cause nipple irritation. Disposable nursing pads and cotton ones are quite comfortable.
- If you think that your bed is likely to get wet at night, change your nursing pads immediately before you go to bed. You can also keep a large towel under you while you sleep.
- Wear dark printed dresses instead of light ones. The milk stains are likely to show lesser on these.
- Do not pump the milk. Pumping only stimulates the breasts to produce more milk.
